Choosing the wrong niche is the fastest way to burn money in pay per call marketing. In this session, we built a porta-potty rental campaign from scratch to demonstrate a critical lesson: when payouts are too low, even a perfectly optimized campaign can’t turn a profit on Google Ads. We also covered restricted niches like locksmith (which requires licensing), portfolio bidding for managing campaigns at scale, and a breakdown of home services verticals by competition and opportunity.
What We Covered
- Niche profitability math – Why $40+ payouts are the minimum for Google Ads, and what happens when you ignore that
- Full campaign build – Porta-potty rental campaign setup as a teaching exercise
- Restricted niches – Locksmith licensing requirements and how to stay compliant
- Portfolio bidding at scale – Managing multiple campaigns without micromanaging bids
- Home services opportunity map – Which verticals are saturated vs. untapped
The $40 Payout Rule
Before you set up a single campaign on Google Ads, do the math. If your average payout per conversion is below $40, you are fighting an uphill battle. With typical home services CPCs of $1.50-5.00 and 5-7 clicks needed per conversion, your cost per acquisition lands between $10-35. Below $40, there is barely any margin left.
- $10-20 payouts (porta-potty, appliance repair) – Extremely difficult on Google Ads, consider Bing or Facebook instead
- $20-40 payouts – Marginal, requires very tight CPC control and high conversion rates
- $40-80 payouts (pest control, plumbing) – The sweet spot for sustainable Google Ads campaigns
- $80+ payouts (roofing, legal, insurance) – Scale aggressively once you have the fundamentals down
Restricted Niches: Check Before You Launch
Some verticals on Google Ads require special licensing or compliance verification before you can run ads. Locksmith is a prime example — Google requires proof of licensing in the US, and running campaigns without it can get your account suspended immediately. Google’s policy restricts locksmith and garage door ads in the US and requires advertisers to pass Advanced Verification.[1]Local services restricted policy (Advanced Verification)support.google.com
- Locksmith – Requires proper licensing; using workaround keywords risks account suspension
- Garage door repair – Similar compliance requirements in some markets
- Always verify before spending – A suspended account loses all your campaign data and optimization history
Portfolio Bidding for Scale
Once you move beyond a handful of campaigns, managing individual bids becomes unsustainable. Portfolio bidding lets you control costs across multiple campaigns — even across multiple accounts — from a single strategy.[2]About portfolio bid strategiessupport.google.com Set your max CPC and target CPA once, and let Google optimize within those guardrails.[3]About Target CPA bidding (bid limits)support.google.com
- 100-300% bid adjustments for calls – Prioritize phone call clicks over website clicks by increasing bids on call interactions. Google’s call bid adjustments are built to show your call assets more often without bidding higher for website clicks.[4]Optimize the performance of your call adssupport.google.com
- Centralized cost control – One bidding strategy governs all your campaigns consistently
- Scale without micromanagement – Essential when you are running thousands of dollars per day across multiple verticals
Home Services: Where the Opportunities Are
The biggest home services verticals — HVAC, pest control, roofing — are well-known and heavily competed. But there are dozens of smaller verticals with real search volume and far less competition.
- Saturated verticals – HVAC, pest control, roofing, plumbing, electrician — profitable but competitive
- Growing opportunities – Solar, concrete, architecture — less competition, growing demand
- Untapped potential – Appraisals, minor home services — harder to find across networks but low competition
