Wan2.2-Animate-14B, Explained Simply

What Wan2.2-Animate-14B is, what it does well, and what it costs — released 2025-09-11 by Alibaba.

TLDR
  • Alibaba just released a new AI tool that can take a still photo of a person and make a realistic video of them moving and acting.
  • It can copy the exact body movements and facial expressions from a "driver" video and paste them onto the person in your photo.
  • It is also great at swapping out characters in existing videos with new ones, keeping the original background and lighting intact.

Wan2.2-Animate-14B is a new AI video-generation model made by Alibaba. It is designed for digital artists, video creators, and developers who want to easily create character animations or swap characters in videos without needing traditional animation skills or expensive motion-capture gear.

What it does well

This model specializes in "character animation and replacement with holistic movement and expression replication." In plain English, that means it is incredibly good at two things:

1. Puppeteering a photo: You can give it a single picture of a person, plus a video of someone else moving. The AI will make the person in your picture move and make facial expressions exactly like the person in the video.

2. Character replacement: You can take an existing video and swap out the person in it with a different character. The AI keeps the original background, lighting, and camera movements, but seamlessly puts the new character into the scene.

How it compares

Compared to Alibaba's previous model (Wan2.1), this new version was trained on a lot more data—about 65% more images and 83% more videos. Because it learned from so much extra material, it is much better at handling complex movements, understanding what you ask it to do, and making videos that look cinematic and realistic. The makers claim it achieves top performance among both open-sourced (free to the public) and closed-sourced (private, paid) AI models.

What it costs and what it can handle

The model is open-source, meaning the code and model weights are free to download. While this specific 14B (14-billion parameter) animation model requires some serious computing power to run, the wider Wan2.2 family includes a 5B model that is fast and can run on consumer-grade graphics cards, like an RTX 4090. The 5B model can generate high-definition 720P video at 24 frames per second.

Worth knowing

  • Hardware limits: Because this is a large 14B model, you will need a high-end computer with a powerful graphics card to run it locally on your own machine.
  • Software integration: It is already set up to work with ComfyUI (a popular node-based tool for AI image and video generation), but it is not yet officially integrated into Diffusers (another popular, simpler AI software library).
  • Where to try it: If you don't have a powerful computer, you can test it out for free in your browser using Alibaba's Wan.video site, ModelScope Studio, or HuggingFace Spaces.
