This update is all about making your AI coding assistant easier and safer to use. It matters a lot if you use AI tools to write or review code, giving you better control over your AI costs, letting you multitask with multiple chats, and protecting your computer when you open code from the internet.

What's new

• Track AI chat costs: You can now see the total cost of an entire AI chat session, not just single messages. This helps you spot expensive conversations and manage your credits.
• Multiple chats in one window: You can now open several AI chats at the same time in a single session. If your first chat is busy writing a feature, you can open a second tab to write tests or documentation without interrupting the first one. You can even rename each chat tab to stay organized.
• Smarter AI code reviews: When you leave comments on code generated by the AI, those comments are now saved on the server. This means the AI can actually read your feedback and fix the code for you, even if you close the app. The AI can also leave its own comments for you to review.
• A new way to connect AI sessions: VS Code is testing a new system called the Agent Host Protocol. It lets you view the exact same AI session from multiple VS Code windows at the same time.

Improvements

• Simpler AI settings: Instead of using two separate menus to change how an AI thinks (its "reasoning effort") and how much text it can remember (its "context size"), those options are now combined into one easy menu.
• Cleaner AI info pop-ups: When you hover your mouse over an AI model, the pop-up info is much shorter and easier to read, with quick buttons to jump straight to the settings.
• Safer folder browsing: When you open a folder you aren't familiar with, VS Code now opens it in "Restricted Mode" right away. This stops any potentially harmful code from running automatically. Instead of an annoying pop-up asking if you "trust" the folder, you can safely look at the code first and choose to trust it later when you're ready.
• Better website and docs: The VS Code website now has a blog landing page so you can easily see recent posts, and the help documentation has been reorganized into clearer categories like "Agents" and "Editor."

Fixes

• Accidental "Trust" button removed: In the security menu, there used to be a "Trust Parent" button right next to the regular "Trust" button. Because they looked so similar, people often clicked it by mistake and accidentally trusted way more folders than they meant to. That confusing button has been removed to keep your computer safer.

Breaking changes

• Old "Edit mode" is going away: VS Code is phasing out the old built-in "Edit mode" for the AI chat. They recommend using "Agent mode" instead, which can do the same editing tasks but also run tools for you. If your school or company has disabled Agent mode, you will still see the old Edit mode.
