What's new

• Sharing browser tabs with agents: Your AI assistant can now see and interact with your open web browser tabs. This means if the AI edits some website code, it can look at the live webpage to confirm the fix actually worked. For privacy, you have to give it permission first—the AI can't just peek at your browser on its own.
• Agent-initiated sharing: If the AI needs to look at a webpage to finish a task, it can now send you a pop-up asking for permission to share your current browser tab. It's also smart about not opening duplicate tabs.
• VS Code Agents companion app: A special new tool (currently in early testing) lets you run multiple AI tasks at the same time across different coding projects. It works right in your browser or on your phone, and it shows live progress animations while the AI works.
• Tracking AI activity with OpenTelemetry: "OpenTelemetry" is a standard tech tool for monitoring software. You can now use it to track exactly what your AI assistant did, how long each step took, and how many tokens (units of AI brain power) it used. This helps you figure out why an AI might be acting weird or costing too much.
• Model details in chat: When the AI replies, it now shows a little badge showing exactly which AI model (like Claude Sonnet 4.6) answered you. This helps you keep track of which AI is doing the best work.

Improvements

• Cheaper AI to-do lists: AI assistants use to-do lists to stay on track during big projects. Now, instead of the main, expensive AI updating that list, a smaller, cheaper "background agent" does it. This saves tokens (which saves you money) while keeping the main AI focused on the actual coding.
• Fewer security interruptions: VS Code now trusts developers a bit more. You won't get as many annoying pop-up warnings asking for network access or permission to save temporary files.
• Markdown preview switching: Markdown is a simple way to format text for the web. You can now switch much faster between looking at the raw Markdown code and seeing what the final webpage will look like.

Fixes

• The new VS Code Agents tool fixed bugs with how it handles "sub-sessions" (mini AI tasks running inside a bigger task), making sure the tabs and lifecycles run smoothly without crashing.
