Goose v1.42.0 Changelog

What changed in Goose CLI v1.42.0, released 2026-07-13 โ€” explained in plain English.

TLDR
  • Track your spending and speed: You can now see exactly how much each AI message costs and how fast it loads.
  • Stay organized: Your chat history can now be grouped by project, making it much easier to manage multiple assignments or coding tasks.
  • Smarter local AI: Better support for Ollama (a tool for running AI on your own computer) means it automatically detects your models and memory limits.

This update is all about giving you more control and visibility over your AI chats. Whether you are a student trying to keep your school projects organized, or a developer watching your API budget, these changes make Goose more transparent, easier to navigate, and safer to run.

What's new

  • Cost and Speed Stats: You can now see real-time stats for each message, including how many "tokens" (chunks of words) were used, the cost, and the speed (tokens per second). It also calculates the total cost of your entire chat session.
  • Project Grouping: Your sidebar is now much cleaner. You can group your chat histories by project and see project names in the folder switcher.
  • Ollama Cloud Support: Goose can now automatically discover your Ollama models and figure out their "context limits" (how much text they can remember at one time).
  • Follow-up Hints: The AskAI bot will now suggest helpful next steps or follow-up questions to keep your conversation flowing.
  • Python Developer Tools: For those who write code, Goose released early-stage tools (an SDK, or Software Development Kit) that make it easier to connect Python programs to Goose.

Improvements

  • Safe Code Execution: If you run code inside Goose, it now has a timeout limit. This prevents programs from running forever or freezing your computer if they get stuck in an infinite loop.
  • Security Boost: Goose will now block automatic updates if it cannot verify that the update is safe and authentic.
  • Clearer Settings: The "Session" tab in your settings has been renamed to "External Backend" so it is easier to understand what it does.
  • Mac Performance: Under-the-hood improvements make running local AI models on Apple Silicon (Macs) faster and more stable.

Fixes

  • Ghost Chats Deleted: Goose now automatically cleans up empty, unused chat sessions when you open the app.
  • Smarter Error Recovery: If certain AI models send slightly broken instructions, Goose will now automatically fix and run them instead of crashing.
  • Disappearing Cursor: Fixed a bug where your command-line cursor would disappear after you exited the configuration menu.
  • Accurate Memory Limits: Fixed an issue to ensure Goose correctly reports how much text memory an AI model can handle.
