Codex is getting a major upgrade that makes it much better at handling Windows computers. This update is a big deal if you use Windows because the AI can now physically operate your desktop apps, and you don't even need to be sitting at the computer to make it happen.
What's new
- Windows Computer Use: Codex can now "drive" a Windows PC. It looks at the screen, clicks buttons, and types text to operate your desktop apps while it works.
- Remote Control for Windows: You can now start a task on a Windows computer straight from the ChatGPT app on your phone (iOS or Android) or from a Mac. You can check on its progress from wherever you are.
- New Profile Section: Your settings now have a profile area that shows your account details, usage stats, and "token activity" (tokens are basically the chunks of text the AI reads and writes, so this shows how much you've used).
- Better Multitasking: Codex can now handle "thread coordination" for local projects. This just means it can manage multiple tasks at once, including running separate background tasks if you specifically ask it to.
- Smarter Search: When you look for past Codex conversations, the search now checks the actual words inside your chats and the names of your Git branches (Git is a tool developers use to save and track different versions of their code).
- Identicons for Background Tasks: "Subagents" are mini-AI helpers that work in the background. They now have "identicons"—those unique, robot-like profile pictures—so you can easily tell them apart while they work.
- Keyboard Shortcut Upgrades: Setting up keyboard shortcuts is easier. You can now search for specific keys to bind them, and there's a simple button to reset everything back to default.
- Google Workspace Capture: If you use Chrome, Codex is better at reading and grabbing information from Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides tabs.
