It is their most capable generally available model, which means it is the smartest version anyone can use right now through their official platforms. Because it is Anthropic's "most capable" model, its main strength is handling complex, difficult tasks that cheaper or smaller AI models might mess up. The main difference between this and Anthropic's previous model, Claude Opus 4.7, is that 4.8 is more capable. However, it keeps the exact same set of tools and platform features as 4.7. So, you are getting a smarter "brain," but the way you use it and the extra features it comes with haven't changed from the last version.

• Context window: It supports a 1 million token context window by default. A "token" is a small chunk of a word that AI uses to read and write text. One million tokens is roughly 750,000 words—meaning you could paste in several long novels or a whole textbook, and it could read them all at once without forgetting the beginning.
• Max output: It can generate up to 128,000 tokens in a single reply. That is about 95,000 words, which is long enough to write a short book in one go.

Worth knowing

If you already use the older Claude Opus 4.7, Anthropic has put out a "migration guide."
