This update is all about making Claude Codeβ€”a command-line tool where Claude helps you write and run softwareβ€”much more stable, faster, and easier to use. It is a big deal for developers who rely on screen readers, work in secure corporate networks, or run long coding sessions where the tool used to slow down or run out of memory.

What's new

  • Screen reader mode: Visually impaired developers can now turn on a plain-text mode that plays nicely with screen-reading software.
  • Vim shortcut customization: If you use the Vim text editor mode, you can now map two-key sequences (like typing jj quickly) to act as the Escape key.
  • Corporate launcher support: Added a setting (CLAUDE_CODE_PROCESS_WRAPPER) that lets Claude run safely inside restricted corporate networks by routing its background tasks through a required company wrapper program.
  • Mouse support: You can now use your mouse to click on options and menus in fullscreen mode.

Improvements

  • Smoother typing: The app is much more responsive because updating your task list no longer forces the entire screen to redraw.
  • Massive speedups: Claude can now process external tools (using MCP, a protocol that connects Claude to outside data) up to 7 times faster.
  • Less memory and disk hogging: The app now cleans up after itself. It uses up to 79x less disk space by deleting old file backups, limits its file cache to 16 megabytes, and plugs several "memory leaks" (where the app forgets to release computer memory it is no longer using).
  • Better background tasks: Finished background tasks will now stay in your /tasks list instead of vanishing instantly. Also, if you reconnect to a background task, you will see its progress history immediately instead of staring at a blank loading screen.
  • Smarter safety blocks: Claude is now better at catching and stopping catastrophic commands (like accidentally deleting your entire computer with rm -rf ~) even when you are running it in automatic or shortcut modes.

Fixes

  • Restoring "Fast Mode": Fixed a bug where "fast mode" (which uses a quicker, cheaper AI model) would stay turned off even after you switched back to a model that supports it.
  • No more lost messages: If you type a reply to a background task and your connection drops, your text is now saved and sent automatically once you reconnect.
  • Update and crash fixes: Fixed several bugs that caused the app to crash or freeze, including crashes right after the app auto-updated, and crashes caused by servers abruptly closing connections.
  • Memory limit false alarms: Fixed a bug where auto-updating made Claude temporarily think its "context window" (its short-term memory) was 100% full when resuming a long session.
  • Giant table freezes: Huge Markdown tables (over 200 rows) will no longer freeze the app; it will now cleanly show the first 200 rows and a note saying there are more.
  • Better error messages: Instead of giving you generic error codes, the app now gives clear, helpful explanations when things go wrong with AWS login, API keys, or search tools.
  • Release notes memory fix: Fixed a funny bug where typing /release-notes would accidentally feed the entire history of updates into Claude's active memory, wasting space and slowing down all your next questions.
